Chapter thirteen

Venom

Cassius

Ah, what a cluster fuck this day has been.

First, I let the damn sow get out because I was daydreaming.

Now, I can feel the venom coursing up my arm.

Normally pain was something I could handle, but we were so close to a full moon that my wolven was raging inside me.

Dragging a deep breath into my lungs, I kept my outward appearance calm and reassuring for her sake. I should have sensed him well before I put my hand on him, but I was focused on her. The soft warmth of her body wrapped around me. Her scent teasing me.

The things I wanted to do to her.

The things my wolven demanded to do to her.

We were all struggling with our beasts right now.

It’s just part of the cycle we go through. It’s part of the reason Darius is obsessively healing her at night. He claims it’s because he wanted her gone, like yesterday. If his beast was reacting to her like mine, I suspect he’s frightened that he will complete the bond we all feel with Hardley.

If she’s still here when the moon is fat and round in the sky…

God, if she survived three days with our wolven in complete control, she’ll be more traumatized than any horror she endured during her childhood.

I reached the top of the ridge and met my father’s concerned gaze. “You need to go, son.”

Hardley dropped to the trail. “Go? He’s just been tagged by a copperhead.” She took my hand to examine the bite. It was already swelling.

Bear held my gaze as he lied to Hardley. “We have a first-aid kit stashed in an old cabin near here. It has what he needs to heal.” My father’s voice had an edge to it. He is also struggling with his wolven around her. This is bad. Out of the three of us, he has the best relationship with his wolven.

If he was struggling with making a rational decision, Hardley was doomed.

Hardley turned to Dar. “Can’t you do something? Heal him?”

Dar shook his head slowly, his gaze fixed on the rapid pulse at her throat. “I can only heal the wound, not remove the venom.”

“You need to go, son.”

As my father repeated himself, Hardley whirled on him with worry etched on her face. “Alone? You can’t let him hike out alone. What if he has a reaction or something?” My heart seized as I realized her worry was for me. She felt the bond enough to protect me, even from my own alpha.

I needed to shift and let my beast consume the venom in my body. My lycan side is powerful right now, and it’s going to be a fight to shift back to my mortal form. Back when Dar and I first matured, we succumbed to our feral side for a full week during a full moon cycle.

Now we only lost control for roughly three days.

Bear can maintain his mortal form until the night the moon is fullest. Even when he sets his wolven loose, they communicate inside like old friends.
